P for sPot the Product?
Ofcom has just announced the logo that UK-produced programmes will have to show if they contain product placements. Appearing for three second at the start and end of the programme, the “Big P” is supposed to warn viewers that there may be commercial messages ahead. Some would argue it’s good to see this – and it seems laudable that (at least for UK-produced programmes) there is now clarity about when a product is featured as a result of payment. However, as a flipside, I can see the potential for a fun new P-spotting game: Spot the products that have been placed for – and the ones that just happen to be there – and spot the difference!
